The Importance of Chiropractic Care for Kids
Our children are the most important part of our lives and as a parent you want to give them every advantage in life. What chiropractic care does, is evaluate and remove spinal joint restrictions (also known as subluxations) allowing for optimal function of the nervous system. When your nervous system functions properly, it can communicate with the rest of the body appropriately.
Chiropractic looks at the child as a whole, not just focused on one aspect of health.
When does a subluxation first happen?
More and more studies are showing that epigenetics are playing a huge role in our children's health (inherited stresses can go out 14 generations!)
Stress responses and reactions that our great great grandparents can be inherited. Maternal Stress before conception, and during pregnancy have also been linked to nervous system stress - Mom's neurology is baby's neurology.
When children are born they go through a large amount of physical stress which usually causes subluxations. Sometimes these restrictions can manifest as trouble nursing, fussiness, trouble sleeping, colic, ear aches and many other symptoms because the nervous system has interference in its communication of incoming and outgoing information. This affects our bodies ability to adapt to physical, chemical and emotional stressors that we all encounter on a daily basis.
Gentle adjustments help the infant or child to regain proper movement, allowing them to develop and function to the best of their ability.
Adjustments on children use the pressure you would use when checking the ripeness on a tomato.
Unlike adults, joint restrictions, muscle tightness and pain are not typically the reason for seeking chiropractic care. Adjustments focus on improving neurological function. Because our nervous system controls just about all of our organs, hormones, motor development and immune system, a properly functioning nervous system is critical for everyone. Nervous system functions can be inhibited from birth trauma (even from a natural birth) as well as trivial injuries from day to day life.
Infants with issues such as chronic ear infections, colic, nursing issues, torticollis, and digestive issues may benefit from chiropractic care.
Toddlers and young children not meeting developmental milestones, bedwetting, motor delays, chronic upper respiratory infections, and asthma could have irritations to their nervous system.
Older children participating in sports can have many minor traumas which can cause the nervous system to work harder than it needs to. This takes up extra energy to help them maintain posture and multitask. Sometimes lack of focus and fatigue can be symptoms.
Of course there are many other factors that can effect your child's health and it is important to work with your pediatrician to ensure that all of your child's health care needs are being addressed.
